I receive numerous questions every time I post a photo of our new Maiden Home sofa, so I thought I’d put all of the info in one place for you. This is not a sponsored post. This is my honest review!
We purchased a 100″ Wide Dune Sofa with the two-back pillow option in khaki. We also purchased the Dune chair-and-a-half, also in khaki. The chair-and-a-half comes in a single size and only in the scatterback pillow option.
The ordering process was rather impressive. First, I ordered fabric swatches which were free and arrived within a few days. I immediately received a personal follow-up email from a Maiden Home Design Advisor offering to help in my purchasing decision. It was nice to have someone’s actual email address on hand rather than a generic support email. Once I placed the order, I received weekly email updates on it’s status and it was scheduled for delivery within the promised six weeks. There were a few mix ups on delivery day but eventually, we had our new sofas and I was happy with how the team handled the issues.
These sofas are definitely more beautiful in person. I love the laid-back vibes of the washed linen slipcovers which are elevated a bit by the sofa’s super clean lines. The color also looks much better than I had anticipated from the samples. In my opinion, the fabric samples are too small to get a good feel for the color. I should have asked my design advisor for larger samples and/or real-life photos but I didn’t think of it at the time.
Our chair-and-a-half is extremely comfortable. It has just the right amount of density and the scatterback pillows make it really easy to adjust the cushioning to your liking. Our sofa, while still very nice, is not as comfortable as I had hoped. The bench cushion is very dense and the two-back pillow option is not great for cradling your back. This is a conversation sofa more than it is a movie-marathon sofa and will likely serve as such in our next home.
(Note that none of the cushions are attached in any way. The back pillows need to be adjusted back to shape often, but the seat cushions are heavy enough that they don’t move or slide at all.)
I have also had trouble with feathers poking through the bench cushion. This is something that they said wouldn’t happen because of the thick inner lining, but it does and it’s kind of annoying. I’m not sure if this will lessen over time or not.
Update: I thought it was worth mentioning that I am fairly short and I still find that the back rest is too low to provide any meaningful support.
The fabric is power-washed linen and seems to resist liquids and light stains pretty well. Water beads right off of it. All of the covers are removable and machine-washable which is a HUGE reason why we went with this sofa. Even in a light color, it’s fairly pet and kid-friendly. I’ve washed it once so far and was surprised by how easy it was to put the covers back on.
Unfortunately, I’m also starting to see some pilling in the spots where we sit most often. This was another thing they said wouldn’t happen so I’m keeping an eye on it and hoping it doesn’t get worse over time.
Update: The pilling seemed to rapidly get worse so I reached out to Maiden Home. Their response was, essentially, that it was our clothing and not the sofa fabric that caused the pilling. They suggested that I shave the sofa from time to time. They did offer to send a new cover but I’m not sure how that would solve the problem given their explanation. I wasn’t thrilled with their response in this case.
If these pieces stand up over time, I would definitely consider purchasing from Maiden Home again in the future. I love that they make custom furniture more accessible while still maintaining strict quality standards and I appreciate the very hands-on customer experience. I’ll keep you updated!
If you like this minimalist slip-cover style but want to purchase elsewhere, I’ve rounded up some similar options.
Update: I typically shy away from recommending Maiden Home after this experience. After having the sofa for some time, I’ve added some updates to my sections above for additional detail. Please feel free to send me any questions you have!

Hi! Thank you so much for this review. We just recently received a Maiden Home Warren sectional and while it’s the most comfortable sofa we’ve ever sat on (granted we’re upgrading from an Ikea couch haha), we don’t love the color of the fabric in person or that it’s not a slipcover that we can wash so we’re returning it. We’re now looking at Sixpenny’s Neva or MH’s Dune – after waiting 5 months for our MH sofa, I’m nervous to wait another 4-5 to end up with another sofa that’s not right. Did you ever end up trying Sixpenny? If not, has your Dune broken in anymore and become more comfortable? Thank you so much!

Hi Kathryn!
I’m so sorry for the very late reply. I’m sure you’ve made a decision by now but I’ll let you know what I think anyway! We did order a Sixpenny Gabriel sofa. We’ve had it for about 8 months now so I’m getting ready to write my review. In short, I would not purchase another Sixpenny. We are getting ready to sell ours. While the fabric is nicer than the MH, the construction and comfort are not. We are planning to sell our Sixpenny, move the MH to a more “formal” sitting room and are saving up to purchase an RH Maxwell sectional for this tv room. I really wanted to buy from a small company with American-made products, but ultimately, after two failed attempts, I’m going back to something we know we’ll love.

Hi Dani, thanks so much for writing this review! I purchased The Sullivan U-Chaise Sectional in Oct’2019, with Performance Washed Linen in khaki. Over the past few months, I’ve noticed that the fabric is not holding up well (pilling and fuzziness) but I thought I was imaging it because of MH’s advertising around the quality of their fabrics. From your article and in your comments, it sounds like enough people have complained about the Performance Washed Linen that MH has discontinued the line but I can’t find any other reviews online that talk about issues with this fabric line. Did you obtain your information based on conversations with their customer representatives? I ask because I am seriously considering reaching out to MH to file a product complaint–I’ve only had the sectional for less than 2 years and am disappointed in the quality, given the price point and the expectation that this item was going to last for at least 10-12 years.

Hi Kim,
I’m so incredibly sorry for missing your comment! It’s been months now so I’m sure I’m too late, but I’ll respond anyways 🙂 I actually worked directly with the founder. Initially, she was very defensive and stood by their fabric. However, she reached out about a year later and informed me that they were discontinuing their old line of fabrics. She told me that I was the very first customer to bring awareness to the issues and admitted that they didn’t take it seriously at the time. I know that they had started reaching out to anyone with the old fabric and offering free cover replacements (of which, I accepted.) Hopefully, they reached out to you as well. I was very impressed with their eventual follow-up and candor and the new cover is much better quality. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know! (I’m much better at responding on IG if you use it – @goldcoastcanvas)

Hi! Really appreciate this honest review! However I’m confused on fabrics because from what I understand, their perfomane linen is made by crypton. In fact, I had been considering a pottery barn sofa in their crypton performance linen and I’ve compared PBs swatch to Maiden homes swatch and they are EXACTLY the same. So I’m wondering if this is really a maiden home fabric issue or a crypton fabric issue? And it seems if RH uses crypton linen on their cloud, the same pilling would happen? I’m also considering the Sullivan in linen and have been researching like crazy lol

Hi Chelsea!
So sorry for the delayed reply. I purchased our Maiden Home sofa before they released this new line of fabrics – which they switched to after numerous complaints about their original fabric options (of which mine was the first, apparently!) So anything specific to the fabric is based off their old line. They did send me replacement covers but I have not had enough time to get a feel for their performance. I’ll definitely update my review at that time, though!
Best of luck in your search!
Best,
D

Hi!
I just came across your review. I am dealing with the same exact issues as you and am in contact with Maiden home right now trying to find a solution. They are sending me swatches of their new fabrics. Did you end up getting new covers in their new fabrics? If so, can you tell me your experience with them and if you’ve had any of the issues you mentioned? The pilling is HORRIBLE with the original fabric, I do not want to deal with that if I am going to get new covers. I also am talking to them about the discomfort of the back cushions, those are awful for us too. Did they offer any solution for you?
Bobbi | 10th Nov 20
thank you for your detailed review it’s super helpful to me. Like others, i am down to Dune and Sixpenny Neva, and i also felt that MaidenHome was higher quality, so i’m a bit sad to hear your feedback, especially about the bench not being ‘sink in’ comfy and the back height. i would get it with the 2 back pillows like you did, and I’d be using the sofa mostly for lying down reading, so head on a pillow against the arm and stretched out on my back. Even though it’s not ‘sink in’ comfy, do you find it comfortable in this position? Also, if you’re sitting upright, but nestled into the corner, do you think there’s back support, or still not? i would have 1 or 2 throw pillows on the ends like you have shown. thanks so much!
admin | 11th Nov 20
Hi Bobbi,
I’m so glad you found it helpful! Throw pillows can definitely help and we use plenty. The arms of the sofa are very thin and hard but if you have big enough pillows, you could certainly make it work whether sitting or lying down. In either position, because of the firmness of the cushions, I never found it comfortable for longer periods of time. It just doesn’t have enough ‘give’ in it for me personally. The chair-and-a-half, oddly, is considerably more comfortable. It must have something to do with the number of ties in the frame or something. A mystery!
Alison | 1st Oct 20
That’s so helpful to know about the pillows and that they’ve discontinued the fabric – thank you! Apologies but one more question. According to the Maiden Home website the seat height of the Dune is 21” which is SO tall. I have a 17.25”H coffee table and am worried it might be too tall. Now that you’ve broken it in, do you find that you sink down a few inches when you sit? Would love your insight on whether you think it could work with a coffee table of that height (it’s the Vernet Oval Travertine coffee table from Crate and Barrel – https://www.crateandbarrel.com/vernet-oval-travertine-coffee-table/s563104). Thank you so so much!
admin | 12th Oct 20
Weird! I never noticed that measurement! If anything, it felt like a slightly lower than average seat height which works for me because I’m short 😉 There’s definitely a little bit of sinking but it’s not one of those sofas that envelops you if that makes sense. I’m guessing that 21″ is at it’s fluffiest, never-been-used state haha.
Our coffee table shown in these photos is 15″ high. It didn’t feel too far off from the sofa seat height but I definitely would have preferred something taller like the one you linked – I think that would be perfect!
And ps. don’t apologize – you can ask me all the questions you want!
Alison | 29th Sep 20
Thank you so much for this review. I’m obsessed with the look of the Dune (and love that it comes in multiple lengths) but am so glad I saw this before pulling the trigger! It also makes me sad though. Have you by chance tried putting the scatter back pillows from the chair on the couch? Wondering if they’re taller and provide any additional back support because then MAYBE I can justify the other issues. Thank you!!
admin | 29th Sep 20
Hi Alison! I’m so so glad you appreciate the review! I try to keep it real haha. The scatterback pillows are definitely more comfortable than the two-back version because they do sit a bit higher than the sofa frame and because you have the ability to move them around to get comfy. I haven’t moved them over to the sofa but the chair-and-a-half has the same back height so I assume it would be a similar feel.
I do have other good news! Maiden Home reached out to me to let me know that they’ve discontinued the line of fabric I have on my sofa. Apparently, I was the first customer to bring this issue to their attention and they finally determined it was defective! They are sending me samples so I can choose cover replacements from their new fabric lines. Obviously it will be a while before I can test it out but it’s promising! I’ll be sure to update this post once I do.
Thank you for being here!

Thanks so much for the honest review. I know it takes a lot of work to write and post. I’m the beginnings of decorating my new place in SF and am looking for a super soft loungey sofa and of course this popped up. Also looking at Sixpenny, RH, CB2, Pottery Barn, Lovebird, BenchMade Modern, etc. I loved that Maiden Home was hand tied springs, but maybe that’s what makes it less sinkable and more firm? Maybe I need to go with a high quality sinuous spring/webbing suspension.
admin | 29th Sep 20
Hi Jason,
Thank you for the kind words! I promise to always keep it real. That’s a great point about the springs and certainly plausible. That might also explain why our chair-and-a-half seems to have much more give than the sofa. I am still undecided on a replacement (I’m struggling with the idea of replacing nearly-new sofas) but would love to hear from you if you choose something else! I’ve been particularly interested in Sixpenny as I’ve heard great things.
Thank you for being here and for taking the time to comment!
Ruth | 4th Sep 20
Can you tell us exactly the fabric you ordered for the Dune? They have several choices including a chenille – maybe that one wouldn’t pill?
admin | 4th Sep 20
Hi Ruth,
It’s possible! Linen was the only option at the time we ordered. Ours is Performance Washed Linen in Khaki though it looks like they no longer sell a color under that name. Their new textured linen which is a cotton/linen blend might stand up better to pilling. If we didn’t have so many other issues with it, I’d consider just trying a new cover!
Momo | 24th Aug 20
Thank you for your honest review of the Dune. I favored the style of the Sullivan more but was also interested in the Dune but had concerns about it being too short. I searched for photos featuring a person on both the Sullivan and Dune to see if there was neck support in a sink in lounge position but could not find any in the Dune. As for the RH Cloud, I can provide feedback on that sofa. Unfortunately it has the same issues with feathers poking through which for the price should not happen (this did not happen initially) but than again I have yet to experience a down filled sofa that doesn’t have this issue even if it is wrapped. It’s also so deep and low that it’s difficult to get up from but my parents still think it was worth the price. Personally it looks like high end frumpy bean bags squished together but I know that aesthetics is subjective and I like cleaner more minimalist lines. Definitely needs constant fluffing to look cloud like. I will say that it has held up well considering our large family gatherings and pets (two cats, a dog and an parrot) and the fabric is soft and durable but definitely stain prone as is the nature of linen.
Also I want to mention I love your design aesthetics and look forward to seeing more posts.
admin | 2nd Sep 20
Hi! I’m so glad you found this helpful! I love the low profile of the Dune but quickly realized it didn’t make sense functionally…and I’m a short person! I also really appreciate your feedback about the RH Cloud. My only experience with it is the showroom pieces (which I’m sure they fluff often) so this is great insight. I’m leaning toward trying the Sixpenny sofa but am trying to deal with this one for as long as we can haha. Thanks so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a message!
Mark | 14th Aug 20
@Amy – Did you end up purchasing the Sixpenny Neva? I’m considering it now. While I feel Maiden Home has slightly better quality, none of their sofas have that sofa welcoming feel, like the Sixpenny Neva seems to have.
Any suggestions for something with the quality of Maiden home but the comfort and softness of Sixpenny, for example?
admin | 2nd Sep 20
I’m curious to know as well! I’m considering the Neva as a replacement sofa but have not had any first-hand experience. I’ll keep asking around!

Thank you so much for your honest reviews, it’s so helpful! Please stay true to the mission as you get more traffic to your site, which I know you will because your aesthetic is gorgeous. I had a quick question- would you mind sharing where the blue rug in your photos is from? I’ve been looking for something like that with a fringe for some time without much luck.
admin | 23rd Jul 20
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! I promise to always be as helpful as possible and continue sharing my honest opinions. It’s what I’m here for!
Here are a few sources for that rug in case you want to price shop. I will say, the product photos are pretty misleading. It is much more blue in person (like in my photos). Also note that because of the hand weave, it can’t be vacuumed…I use my vacuum’s brush attachments instead. Ahh…the things we do haha. Let me know if you have any questions!

Any updates on the durability. We are considering RH but have read horrible reviews on quality and durability
admin | 30th Sep 19
Hi Luce!
Unfortunately, we are still dealing with pilling and feather-loss. If you do go with an RH sofa I’d be interested to hear your feedback! Our 2nd choice was an RH Cloud and I wonder if it would have been better or not.
Amy Obusek | 30th Aug 19
Oh man. I was really counting on this sofa. I have been obsessing. I got a sofa at macys in the winter and while it looks pretty it is viciously uncomfortable.
So I have been determined to find a deep seating feather filled dream sofa. It is hard to believe this sofa is a disappointment. I mean, I totally believe you, but how can it feel so upright and firm with all the feather fill and depth?
I think i will go with the sixpenny neva sofa. But their fabrics are not performance fabrics and they don’t have all the perks maiden home does, like free white glove delivery and lifetime guarantee. And! I just saw on their page the furniture is coming from CHINA! arrrrggghhhh.
So. My main question is…..what would you go for on your next sofa purchase after trying out this maiden home one? Arhaus has a nice looking 44″ deep sofa but they are getting horrid reviews for service and delivery issues.
So…..what’s you advice? And thank you so so so much for this honest review. This is priceless.
Love, amy
admin | 30th Aug 19
Hi Amy!
First, thanks so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a note! It really means a lot to me. I wanted this to be helpful even if it meant sharing the bad with the good. So thank you for the reassurance!
I was pretty surprised by the firmness of the Dune as well. The Dune chair that we have is a bit softer than the sofa but neither are what I expected. The backs are also very low profile which means no head or neck support. That was something I should have thought of but didn’t.
We had considered the Restoration Hardware Cloud Track Arm sofa (which we tested and loved AND they have performance linen.) We opted for Maiden Home because I like the company’s mission and because aesthetically, the Dune is just so beautiful. BUT ultimately, we wanted a super comfy sofa that we could sink in to and lounge on and the Dune just isn’t that kind of sofa to me. If I could do it again, I would have gone with the RH Cloud and we probably still will when we move.
Let me know if you have other questions and good luck with your search! You’ll have to let me know if you find the perfect one 😉

I love that you also post articles based on your experience and that your site and Instagram account are not full of sponsored staged content like others ie chris loves Julia…
I know that as your site grows (this will happen fast you have such a great style!) you will get more sponsors but please keep posting true stuff the way you do now, it is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Oh thank you thank you thank you x a million! This truly means SO much to me because I was actually unsure if it was a good idea to post this! But I try to be very conscientious about how I use this space. I want it to be authentic and useful because that is what I would want as a reader.
I’ve made a rule for myself that I will only partner with a brand after I’ve had experience with and love their products. I promise to keep sharing the truth!
TW | 21st Jun 19
*sigh* I was wondering if their sofas would pill. I’ve been communicating with a designer after receiving fabric samples and expressed that very same concern. They told me their fabrics don’t pill, have high pill ratings, and kept pushing me to read articles on their blog that I’d already read before. I still didn’t trust their woven fabric choices won’t pill. Your review confirms this. Thanks!
admin | 22nd Jun 19
I know – it’s a bummer. But I’m so so glad that this was helpful!!
