One Room Challenge Week 4: Furniture is here!

For this Spring’s One Room Challenge, I’ll be redoing a bedroom in my Mother-in-Law’s house! It’s Coming Together!

In my previous post, I walked you through my approach to choosing a paint color. I finished painting just in time for the furniture to arrive! I’m still missing several pieces but I can see the vision coming together. Here’s what I accomplished this week…

The Bed

The bed is a beautiful channel tufted linen bed. Typically, for a small space, I’d recommend a footed bed with ample space underneath because solid furniture tends to feel heavy in small spaces. You want to be able to see as much of the floor as possible. I would have also forgone a foot-board in a small space because it tends to cut interrupt flow and creates a more “closed-in” feeling. I ignored both of those things for purposes of decorating this room because I know we’ll be moving it all in to our own home in the near future.

The mattress and box spring were existing pieces so, even though they are the right heights for this particular bed, we’re making do.

The Desk

The desk also arrived! I love finding bargain furniture that has some old-world detailing like the turned legs on this piece. To amp up the character just a bit more, I switched out the standard woods knobs to these really pretty antique bronze mini-pulls. Their dainty size matches the thin profile of the desk.

Hint: If you’re opting for inexpensive furniture, look for pieces that don’t try to mimic natural wood, as they can come off orange and cheap-looking. Black, white and warm grey pieces look sophisticated and can easily be dressed up with hardware to look more expensive than they are.

The Closet

There are two of us and a dog sharing this room so we needed to make the most of the tiny closet. Storing clothing in dressers is generally more space efficient than hanging so I opted to move the dresser out of the room and into the closet.

I purchased large storage baskets for the shelf and a hamper and floor basket for the space under our hanging clothes. Trays, drawers, baskets and hooks – anything that can corral loose items – are going to be your best tools in small spaces!

Still To Come…

I’m still waiting on our nightstands, lamps and my desk chair – they are, understandably, delayed because of warehouse closures.

I’m also working on my bedding layers. I’ve started with this set from Serena & Lily but need to work in some warmer beiges to pull in the headboard.
