Casual Thanksgiving Tablescape

I teamed up with some lovely ladies to show you our take on a Fall or Thanksgiving Tablescape. Each of our tables is unique and between the five of us, we’ve covered everything from traditional, to casual, to kid-friendly! Be sure to check out the others linked at the end of this post.

Much like the rest of our home, I want our holiday table to feel like a casual spot, free of formalities and full of relaxed vibes. When we share meals in our family, it’s always all about the food. So for this holiday tablescape, I omitted formal place settings and centerpieces and let the food take center stage.

The Foundation

I set the stage with this amazing vintage cutting board that I found at my favorite local shop, Back Home Living. The board is well-loved and full of chippy character. I stared at it every time I went in, so I knew it needed to come home with me. Can you imagine it being used for an epic Charcuterie spread? That’s my goal some day!

I laid down a white linen table cloth under the cutting board to help it really stand out. I also love the breezy feel of linen which lends itself to the casual vibe I was going for. (And it comes in 17 different colors so there is something for everyone!)

If you can’t score a cutting board this large, you can always make one by lining up the biggest ones you have or by cleaning and treating a cut of wood from your local hardware shop.

The Star of The Show

The main star on stage is this lemon blueberry “naked” cake (recipe here.) There is something really laid-back and organic about a cake that doesn’t have perfectly polished icing on it. Lemon and blueberry aren’t traditional Fall flavors, but I love the idea of something light and refreshing after a heavy meal. Fresh rosemary makes a seasonal touch and adds greenery to the table.

The cake is as pretty as any centerpiece, so displaying on the table seemed like a good idea to me! Plus, it gives everyone something to look forward to. I linked the recipe at the end of this post.

The Dishware

Terracotta hues add warmth to the table. Small nibbles, like olives or nuts, keep guests busy when they’re waiting for their meal.

Creamy ceramics really add to the organic nature of the tablescape. I love collecting an odd piece here and there. Each one has a story. These are from Connected Goods.

The glassware is hand-blown and made of recycled glass. Each one is slightly different and none of them quite match up in height or width. It’s so Wabi Sabi and I love it!

The plates have a similar organic beauty to them. Even though they have beautifully clean lines, I love how they don’t stack perfectly and their color is not pure white.

I especially love these dishes because they are matte on the outside but glazed on the inside which helps prevent silverware marks. It’s the best of both worlds! They also have tan stoneware bottoms that add to their handmade look.

In choosing flatware, I stuck with clean lines and just a touch of earthyness with the blackened handles.

The Finishing Touches

Though not your typical tablescape addition, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out my collection of vintage pillows. Our dining room is small, so we maximized space by opting for bench seating and pushing it up against the wall – much like a breakfast nook. This created the perfect opportunity for some cozy additions like the pillows. The warm hues are perfect for Fall.

They are all from my favorite pillow shop, Cloth & Main.

And there you have it! A casual Thanksgiving Tablescape.

[…] Thanksgiving will likely look different for most of us this year. Though I’ll miss our usual big family gatherings over the holidays, I’ve also come to appreciate how even the littlest things can make a meal feel special these days. Since we’re in between homes, we don’t have a table to decorate this year but here are a few pieces I’ve been dreaming about for our next one. (You can catch last year’s casual Thanksgiving table scape here!) […]
