Frozen Pineapple Jamu

Jamu is a Balinese staple and we had it almost every day when we were there. It’s an all-natural health tonic with anti-inflammatory, immunity-boosting properties thanks to the fresh ginger and tumeric. It’s great in place of orange juice at breakfast or as a natural alternative to drug-store vitamin C powders. But the best way to enjoy it, in my opinion, is blended with frozen pineapple!

Making The Jamu

For the Jamu, you’ll need a blender, a large pot for boiling, a cheesecloth or other fine strainer and a large glass jar or other container that seals. I use my Ninja Foodi which blends and boils automatically using the “soup” setting, saving me the step of having to transfer the juice to the stove.

Note that Tumeric turns everything yellow so I recommend covering your counter space and using a glass jar (rather than plastic) for storage. The color will rinse out of your pot, sink, etc. but you may need the help of some Soft Scrub if you let things sit for too long.

  • 4 Cups Water
  • 3/4 Cup fresh tumeric roots, rinsed, not peeled
  • 1/2 Cup fresh ginger roots, rinsed, not peeled
  • 1/4 Cup fresh lime juice
  • fresh ground pepper
  • honey to taste (optional)

Using a blender, blend the water, tumeric, ginger and lime juice. Once it’s blended, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or other fine strainer to separate the juice from the pulp. You can strain the juice directly into a pot for boiling. Discard the pulp.

Bring the juice to a boil on the stove, then reduce the heat and let the juice simmer for 15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and transfer to a glass storage jar.

Frozen Pineapple Jamu

To enjoy Jamu as a frozen drink, blend 1/4 Cup Jamu with 3/4 Cup frozen pineapple chunks (makes 1 serving.) If you’re using the entire batch of Jamu, you’ll need about 6 Cups frozen pineapple chunks.

Really feeling fancy? Hollow out fresh pineapples (mini ones are great for this!) and stick them in the freezer for an hour. Serve your Frozen Pineapple Jamu in the pineapples to keep things cold.

Other Ways to Enjoy Jamu

Jamu can also be enjoyed like a hot tea. Simply mix 1/4 Cup Jamu juice with hot water. It’s great for easing cold symptoms.

If you’re drinking Jamu on it’s own as a shot, be sure to add a pinch of fresh ground black pepper to it maximize the body’s ability to absorb Tumeric.

It’s also great as a juice, mixed with equal parts cold, fresh water and honey to taste.
