One Room Challenge: Fall 2018

This year I’ve decided to join One Room Challenge as a guest participant!

Hi friends!

One Room Challenge (ORC) is a biannual event that follows 20 interior designers in their journey as they complete a room in 6 weeks. This year, I decided to (finally) join as a guest participant and I’m pretty psyched to let you in on my plan next week!

Designing and installing a room in 6 weeks is truly a challenge on it’s own, but as a renter, I have a few extra challenges to face. Since I can’t change the architecture of a room or install anything that isn’t easily reversible, I am going to have to really make wise choices in furniture and decor.

To complicate things a bit further, Brad and I don’t plan on being here much longer. It doesn’t make sense to spend on things we won’t take with us, so I need to design for our current situation while keeping our future home in mind. This means that I need to avoid designing to very specific spaces. The house that we are in now is a bit unusual in layout and nothing like the type of home we’d like to buy when we move back to Florida. So I chose a room in our house that was pretty “standard.”

Our impending move also means carefully choosing pieces that are consistent with the rest of our aesthetic because they may end up in different rooms at the next house. I think this is a good design rule in general but it’s especially important for renters who still want to invest in long term pieces.

Ready for a hint? If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a bit, you might have noticed that there’s one room in our house that has gone through a number of dramatic style changes. It’s not a terrible room but I’m excited to actually put some concerted effort into making it truly US. Any guesses?

Stay tuned for the plan reveal next Thursday!
